Final Regulations for the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Amendments to the Clery Act

Publication Date: 2014
Abstract: On October 20, 2014, the Department of Education (ED) published the final regulations for the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) amendments to the Clery Act. The regulations expand rights afforded to campus survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence, and stalking. The final regulations officially go into effect July 1, 2015 and ED has stated that institutions of higher education are expected to make a "good faith effort" to comply with the new regulations until that time. The new regulations are the result of several months of negotiated rule making. The six meeting sessions were followed by a 30-day public comment period before a final document was shared with the Office of Management and Budget for approval.
