Police Use of Nonfatal Force, 2002-11

Abstract: This report examines the prevalence, circumstance, and characteristics of incidents in which police threatened or used nonfatal force and whether these factors varied across resident race and Hispanic origin. It also describes the type of force threatened or used and the perceptions that force was excessive or the police behaved properly during the contact. Finally, it examines trends in the threat or use of force and the relationship between officer and driver race and Hispanic origin in traffic stops involving the threat or use of force.
